Led by the Spirit

For all who are being led by the Spirit of God,

these are the sons of God.  Romans  8:14

We will look at four questions in this teaching:

  • Who are the sons of God?
  • What exactly is “being led by the Spirit”?
  • Qualifications for being led by the Spirit of God.
  • What is walking by the Spirit ? How do you do it?

————————————————————————————————————

Who are the sons of God?

Let’s start by looking at Jesus under His titles as

the Son of God and the Son of Man.

Jesus – The Son of God

Father called Jesus “His Son” in many different time frames such as:

1. pre-incarnate Son of God

example:  Psalm 2 :I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me,” Thou Art My Son, today I have begotten Thee.

(This is Jehovah speaking to Adonai in a psalm of David long before Adonai took on flesh and walked the earth.)

Adonai is a name of the Messiah, in this case pre-incarnate.

Jesus is the earthly name of “the Son”.

Christ is a name referring to His risen and exalted position.

2. Jesus as Son, during his time on the earth

example: at Jesus’ baptism , Matthew 3:17

and behold a voice out of heaven saying, “This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”

3. Christ in glory

Jesus Son of Man

example: Jesus always refers to Himself during this time period as the Son of Man, not the Son of God. I believe it is because of the authority that he received as the sacrifice lamb who takes away the sins of the world. Because he redeems the world back to God, He then acts under a new name–Son of Man.

These are the words of Jesus:

For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of his Father with His angels; and will then recompense every man according to his deeds. Matthew 16:27  also  Mat 19:28,  25:31

“and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.” Mat24:30

He is referred to by a great many other names in the book of Revelation concerning His different roles in future judgments and glories.

We, as the “sons of God”, also receive new names. Is 65:15 Now that we have taken a look at Jesus as a Son, let’s look at our position as sons.

Our position as sons

In 2Cor 6:18 we have a quote that is part of the blood covenant of relationship.

“And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to Me,” says the Lord Almighty.

1. We Are Adopted Sons

What does the Bible say about adoption?  Plenty ! It speaks of the adoption of:

    1. “the righteous”,   Mt 5:9, 2Cor 6:17-18

    2. “of  Israel”, and   Is 63:8-9

    3. “of the Gentiles” in these six ways:

         1.through the gospel  Eph 3:6

         2. by faith in Christ   Gal 3:29

John 1:12 tells us that once we have received Him then He gives us the right to become sons of God.

         3 .by grace Gal 4:16-17

         4. by predestination   Rom 8:29

         5. testified to by the Holy Spirit  Gal 4:5-7

         6. according to promise  Rom 9:8

The Holy Spirit is the enabler in this adoption.

Galatians 4:5 tells us that:

we receive the adoption as sons.

And in verse 6 that because we are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying  Abba!  Father!

And if you are a son, v.7, then an heir through God.

These are the promises to the sons of God.

Romans 8:15 -17 says almost the same thing,

Verse 17 expands the link of sons to heirs. It tells us that if we are sons, then we are heirs also. It even links us (as sons of God) to Christ through a sharing of His inheritance by saying that “we are heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ if indeed we suffer with Him in order that we might be glorified with Him.”  Please notice the qualification of suffering with Christ if we wish to be heirs with Him.

In Job 38:7 we find some pre-creation sons of God shouting for joy over the laying of the foundation of the earth by God. Now here is a good cause for some questions that cannot be answered! It appears that God always had a family.

Qualifications for being led by the Spirit of God

1. We must be reborn from on high.

Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again,

he cannot see the kingdom of God. John 3:3

The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it,

but do not know where it comes from and where it is going;

so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.  John 3:8

2. We must DO the will of the Father.

Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me,

and to accomplish His work.” John 4:34

Not everyone who says to me Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Mt. 7:21

He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him .  John 3:36

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.  Mt. 7:24

And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit, and brings forth, some a hundred-fold, some sixty, and some thirty.   Mt. 13:23

And why do you call Me, Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say? Everyone who comes to me, and hears My words, and acts upon them, I will show you who he is like:      Luke 6:46,47

But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror;  James 1:22,23

3. He must have his spirit, soul, and body, brought under subjection to the Spirit of God .

For we who live, are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus sake, that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 2 Cor 4:11

When we are under subjection to the Holy Spirit, this is what you will see:

But the fruit of the Spirit is: love,   joy,    peace  patience,    kindness,    goodness,

faithfulness,    gentleness,    self-control; against such things there is no law. Gal 5:24

May the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of Jesus Christ.  1 Thes 5:23

4. His mind is continually renewed in Christ Jesus.

But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of he Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit. 2 Cor. 3:18

Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. 2 Cor 4:16

that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.  Eph 4:23,24

Walking by the Spirit.

If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Gal 5:25

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit you are not under the law. Gal.5:16-18

Our behavior (including our words) is our walk.

It is the outward manifestation of what is in us. The Holy Spirit (in us) needs our cooperation to clean up our spirit, soul and body. Yes, this is about a divine takeover! Our lack of cooperation with Him, is the cause of crookedness between what we think, say, do, and desire.

People of the world, our own families, and especially teenagers, can easily spot this crookedness in us (not in themselves of course); and their word for it is hypocrisy. In order to be rid of this crookedness (from original sin) such as lying for example; each individual event, as recognized, must be brought to the light by our own decision to do so. By that I mean, that you must make the crookedness known, by a statement, or in some outward way (apology?) so that it does not stay hidden.

This cleansing or straightening process is called sanctification.

It is represented spiritually by washing with the water of the Word. Until we clean ourselves up with the guidance of the Spirit and maintain the standard of Christ, we will be hypocrites –not walking in truth.

Yes, I really mean using our will to become and stay clean.

Yes, we bring that dirt to the light (manifested and willingly made known to other people, not just Jesus), for cleansing.

Yes, we eat humble pie. Humble pie is the choicest desert at Jesus’ banquet table! Everyone who eats it becomes more like Jesus. Right now I can hear lazy people saying, “But Jesus took all of that on the cross. I don’t have to do anything.”  My reply to you is, “There is no hypocrisy in you then, since He took it all?”

How do you walk by the Spirit?

Here is the answer !

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, entreat you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,

with humility

and gentleness,

with patience,

showing forbearance to one another in love,

being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace . Eph 4:1-3

This scripture shows us precisely how to walk.. I hope that you have a picture of the kind of man that can be led by the Spirit of God. It is nothing less than the New Creation Man who can be led by the Spirit of God.

May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,

through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Neither circumcision or uncircumcision means anything;

what counts is a new creation. And those who will walk by this rule (the new creation) peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God.  Gal .6:14-16
